Paints made from linseed oil can speed your painting s drying time significantly and they re easily found at most art supply stores. If you re using oil based paint on indoor trim doors and cabinets the recoat time differs from water based paint. When using drying oils on their own be careful not to use too much oil in the paint. Oil paint is inherently slow drying compared to the other painting mediums such as acrylic watercolor or gouache paints.

During the paint curing process the molecules interlink to form a solid membrane and they need oxygen for this. For example titanium white and ivory black tend to dry more slowly whereas lead white and burnt umber harden more quickly. The drying time of oil paints can vary based on the oil which was used. For initial oil based layers i might add about 1 part oil to 4 parts paint and increase the amount slightly for proceeding layers.

This means that the paint also has to cure. Recoat time for oil based paint. For busy artists who are producing lots of commissions or have a time limit to finish a series for an upcoming show a faster oil paint drying time is imperative. Oil based paints about 7 days.

How long it takes to cure depends on the type of paint. Look for paints made with linseed oil. However you would not want to paint on plain wood or metal without good surface preparation and a sealer and primer coat of gesso first. Artist oil paint on untreated wood will react to the wood and over time the wood will start to rot and deteriorate.

Latex paints about 30 days. Linseed oil dries faster than walnut oil which itself dries faster than poppy oil. This means you can speed up curing time by increasing the amount of available oxygen it s safer to use fans during the curing process than it is to speed up drying because the painted surface is hard and won t collect dust. The drying time also depends on the oil paint colors you re using some dry faster than others and how much if any drying oil or solvent you re using.

On a properly prepared wood or metal surface oil paint will dry the same as on canvas. Oil based paint is more durable and takes longer to dry than water based paint. Paint doesn t cure or reach maximum hardness until days after the paint is dry. Because of this you have much more time to manipulate oil paint on your canvas before it dries.

Oil paint straight from the tubes may take days sometimes weeks to completely dry. With mediums such as refined linseed oil you can work into the paint for a few days after laying down the initial layer. Many artists myself included do not like working wet on wet.
